2006 CES - Day Two

Friday Jan 6th, 2005

Well, I missed another good keynote today. I didn't originally plan to go to Google's keynote with Larry Page (one of the original founders), as it was scheduled at 4:00pm. If you roamed the floor the *entire* day, you'd be hard pressed to stay awake at these events.

They weren't lost on the star power displayed by their peers, so they had Robin Williams come to throw a few jokes at the crowd.

Here are some details from TechTree.com:

The coolest thing they announced was Google Pack. Go to http://pack.google.com

If you are an IT pro who often supports your family's computers, this tool is fantastic. It will help you select from a group of freeware and install with with ease:

Adobe Reader
Ad-Aware (anti spyware)
Norton Antivirus 2005 SE
Mozilla Firefox

Additional software will be added in the future. A Google rep told me that before they introduce new software into this "Pack" they will test that it is fully compatible with one another and won't cause conflicts.

It disables their respective auto-updates and nag screens, optimally pre-configures each install (so you don't have to check and un-check options), and even handles upgrades/patches through its own auto-update tool. Although, you can configure the Google Pack software to perform updates manually, it still remains resident and sits in your Windows tooltray.

Google Pack is like your own personal IT dept. It mimics the functions of a "software packaging" team within a large corporation.
